Ich bin 54 Jahre alt und habe das “Nussknacker Syndrom” ( Bildgebende Darstellung seit 2024!! vorhanden ) mit verschiedenen Symptomen. Am Ende der meisten Arztbesuche hieß es immer psychosomatische Störungen. Obwohl ich körperliche Schmerzen habe/hatte.

Hello our German Doctors

I thought I would share a special update on … from New Zealand.
Today we moved her to Christchurch so that she can begin her studies at Canterbury University. After wanting to study medicine for such a long time she changed her mind when she discovered Physics earlier in the year and has been accepted to begin a Degree in Biomedical Engineering. She should be returning to high school next year but her grades were exceptional so she has been granted permission to leave a year early which we are so proud of.
We remain forever grateful that you all gave her back her life as I’m sure she wouldn’t be able to achieve this without the care she got in Germany. Thank you all again so much for saving my daughter’s life!

Dear Dr Scholbach,

I am not even sure how to start thanking you.  …was very reluctant to come and see you and wouldn’t even complete the questionnaire, as her experience with medical professionals has often been negative.

She feels like she has answers to so many questions she thought would never be answered.  While I never thought this was psychological not knowing what the cause is, has had a big impact on her well-being.  A diagnosis has allowed her to understand what is going on.  It is not in her head, she is not broken, we can fix this.

She has started aspirin, and I have made an osteopath appointment for Friday while I look for a physio.  If she needs a cannula, hopefully with our new found knowledge of the compression in her elbow, will mean placing a cannula will be possible.  Thank you for seeing her again – thanks for listening – thanks for finding an answer – thanks for making a difference.

I have recommended you to a lot of other parents, hopefully they will visit soon, as having a correct diagnosis is so important.  I am so pleased we trusted in you.

1. Hallo Professors!!!… is now 17! It is 1.5 years since surgery. She is in school preparing for university to study law in 1 years time. She can EAT AND DRINK ANYTHING!!! She can now drive and she is dancing 3 types of dance, tap, contemporary and musical theatre on 3 days every week and is starting a little job on the weekends at a supermarket to earn some money for university.She unfortunately still has pain in the region of her celiac plexus and nausea at times too. She is using a ng at times for water to help clear her bowel which is so slow. But she is learning to manage all these symptoms of EDS and compressions and learning how to look after her health until we learn how to treat them! She works so hard to do physiotherapy each week to strengthen her body against further lordosis!Here is a photo on her 17th birthday enjoying pancakes with her mother 🥰🥰🥰Best wishes

vielen Dank, dass Sie mir den Befund so schnell geschickt haben. ..Vielen Dank, dass Sie mich auch so schnell dran genommen haben. Sie haben mir einige Schmerzen somit erspart. So kann mir zeitnah geholfen werden.

Zu dem bin ich Ihnen sehr dankbar, da ich ohne Ihre Diagnose Probleme bekommen hätte, da mein Schmerztherapeut komplett hilflos war, da er mit den Oberbauchkrämpfen nichts anfangen konnte. Nur durch ihre Diagnose hat er mir wieder Schmerzmittel verordnet.
Zu dem wäre ich über kurz oder lang im Rollstuhl gelandet, da die Schmerzen enorm viel Energie gekostet haben. Vielleicht hätte ich auch eine Magensonde bekommen, wegen den Schmerzen beim Trinken. usw…Ich konnte mich kaum noch daran erinnern wie es ist keine Schmerzen zu haben…
Dank Ihnen habe/ bekomme ich ein schmerzfreies Leben. Verrückt, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich wegen der Oberbauchkrämpfe vorher alles durch machen musste und bei wie vielen Ärzten/ Krankenhäusern ich war. Inklusive der für schwere Fälle (sind Krankenhäuser, die eine Abteilung haben, die versuchen Diagnosen zu finden, wo andere es nicht geschafft haben). Auch diese hatten die Kompressionssyndrome kaum bis garnicht auf dem Schirm.
Bitte geben Sie Ihr Wissen bitte so vielen Menschen wie möglich weiter, damit langfristig den Menschen mit Kompressionserkrankungen geholfen werden kann. Schade, dass es in Deutschland nur Sie gibt, der sich richtig gut damit auskennt. Gefäßchirugen wissen das es sowas gibt, sind allerdings Meilen weit entfernt, diese zu erkennen. Viele kennen Sie als Spezialisten nicht mal.
Gefäßchirugen müsste sehr viel mehr bezüglich dieser Erkankungsbilder geschult werden.

Lieber Herr Prof. Dr. Dr. Sandmann    Gerne möchte ich Ihnen berichten, wie es mir 1 Jahr nach der Operation geht.    Kurz gesagt: Es geht mir viel, viel besser. Sie haben mir nach 47 Jahren Leidensweg ein neues Leben sowie die Möglichkeit der oralen Nahrungsaufnahme geschenkt, worüber ich zutiefst dankbar bin!    Seit der Operation bei Ihnen kann ich mich vollständig per os ernähren ohne postprandiale Schmerzen/Erbrechen und die Sonde ist nach 15 resp. 12 Jahren nicht mehr nötig. Viele weitere Probleme, die ich vorher hatte in Korrelation mit der Jejunalsonde (Dauerentzündung/Schmerzen der Sondeneintrittsstelle mit bis zu 2-stündlichem Verbandwechsel und gelegentlicher Antibiotika-Therapie), Mangelernährung, Schwäche, sind jetzt eliminiert. Ich habe keine Schmerzen mehr im Bein und es geht mir gesamthaft viel besser. Des Weiteren habe ich seit der Operation bei Ihnen am 28.3.2023 keinen Pankreatitisschub mehr gehabt, was eine weitere, erhebliche Verbesserung und Erleichterung für mich ist.    Sie waren mein letzter Versuch, mich mit meinen seit Geburt bestehenden Ernährungsproblemen bei einem Arzt evaluieren zu lassen und ich hatte, bevor ich Sie kennenlernte, es nicht mehr für möglich gehalten, einen Arzt zu finden, der endlich versteht, warum ich mich nicht per os ernähren kann, mich ernst nimmt und mich sogar von diesen postprandialen Problemen/Schmerzen befreit. Die jahrzehntelangen Fehldiagnosen und die Unmöglichkeit einer normalen Nahrungsaufnahme sind dank Ihrer Diagnose und Operation Geschichte.    Auch wenn ich, bedingt durch das EDS-Syndrom, gewisse weitere Beschwerden habe (Gelenke, CFS, partielle neuropathische Schmerzen/kardiologische Beschwerden), so stehen diese zu den postprandialen Schmerzen/Erbrechen und der jahrelangen Unmöglichkeit mich oral ernähren zu können in keinem Vergleich. Sie haben mich von den schlimmsten Problemen befreit und mit den verbleibenden komme ich klar.       Dank Ihrer Diagnose und Operation habe ich auch meine Würde wieder zurückerlangt, welche mir durch jahrzehntelange Fehldiagnosen (psychosomatische Schmerzen, somatoforme Schmerzen, inszenierte Schmerzen, artifizielle Schmerzen, Schmerzen aufgrund einer psychischen Störung, Anorexie usw.) sowie bösartige Unterstellungen (ich würde das Erbrechen nach dem Essen selbst provozieren, weil ich angeblich an Gewicht verlieren wolle) genommen wurde.    Ich danke Ihnen zutiefst für all das, was Sie für mich getan haben!    Mit herzlichen Grüssen und in Dankbarkeit und Wertschätzung,

She is also driving a car, going to parties with friends, dancing and playing the flute and she is on the senior debate team..I am putting together a book of messages/photos/drawings from all the people who have supported her journey. Your suffering met deaf ears and ignorance.

But you were and are not alone! The love of your mother really saved your life. She was fighting like a lioness for you, believing in you and she made the unbelievable reality.

She searched the entire globe for help, and I was privileged to become a part of your healing. This makes me for ever happy and proud.

Dear Professor Scholbach

I can’t thank you enough for seeing my daughter on 21/03/24 and finally giving her the diagnoses that she and we  been waiting on for years. She and we knew that there was something wrong with her however after numerous consultant appointments, telling her the same thing “we can’t find anything physically wrong with you …, eat little and often and we will refer you to the psychiatrist “. This has not only led to …. remaining in excruciating  physical pain but is  psychologically scarred by the treatment of our NHS in Scotland. I tried many many times to contact Doctors in the UK, but unfortunately received no replies.
So, when you diagnosed her with several conditions … felt validated and has had some of her spark reignited psychologically. Her stepdad, myself and … were sobbing with relief after she seen you. The relief was immense. We knew that …. was very ill and she knew this too.

Hello to you and greetings from Lebanon County, Pennsylvania!  I think of you all many times and wanted to write to you. I am so happy to tell you that I am enjoying wonderful health! I have never felt this good in all my life. I just feel so amazing and hardly have any pain!!  It is so exciting to feel good and be able to act “normal”!! I didn’t know it was possible to feel like this!  Thank you all so much for all you did for me at your clinic and for helping to give my health back to me! You were very kind to this strange American😉!  I am now able to work again and even though I have to stop and take little rests, I am so glad to be able to work without pain!  I eat like a pig now, and my neighbor lady says she could cry for joy when she sees my plate of food. She said she used to rejoice if she got me to eat half a banana. Two weeks after I returned home from Germany, I went to one of our Bible Schools for youth, to work in the kitchen for 3 weeks. We fed about 120 people three times a day. That was a big job, and I wasn’t feeling very good then yet. I am happy to be able to live at my own little house again by myself, take care of my adopted Grandma who is in bed all the time, work at a bakery two days a week, volunteer at a bookstore and at an old people’s home, and I also took on the housekeeping at my neighbors. It keeps me busy to make food for ten people, do all the laundry and cleaning and more. 5 farmer men make a lot of dirt and need a lot of food!😁 but I love my work! I also have time for some extra hobbies like sewing blankets for other countries, editing books, and learning the German language. (yup, go ahead and laugh at me!😂I should have learned it BEFORE I came to the hospital, right? I’m afraid I made life hard for you.) From the moment we walked through the door yesterday, we could not believe that you had put so much time and thought into my case, re-examining all of my previous scans before you had even met me.    You instantly commented that ‘thinking’ was a key component in solving my case. For my whole life, I have been treated as a ‘textbook’ patient when my symptoms have never presented as such. Thinking was exactly what I needed!    During the scan, your expertise and meticulous attention to detail was evident. You explained every step of the scan to us but were insistent that the science must prove your theory. When your scan evidenced your hypothesis (from my previous scan) and solved the puzzle that has baffled medics for years, we could not contain our overwhelming relief and excitement.    It is hard for people who have not suffered with a chronic illness to understand but I am at heart a very happy girl who has been living a truly miserable life for so long and I have been desperate for a positive result to prove my symptoms. I read English at Oxford University and now do not work, drive or read.    Last year, I spent 3 months in a London hospital in the Acute Medical Unit and was discharged with no diagnosis on ‘comfort care’. I was told every test had been done. After my discharge, I was told by one top London consultant to ‘give up and stop searching for a diagnosis’ and that I must ‘accept‘ that this was my life.   My mum never accepted this and her relentless research led us to you.    To find out yesterday that I have been living with a massive renal compression, as well as jugular compressions in my neck which explain the plethora of symptoms including tremor, muscle spasms, flank pain, paralysis, 24/7 headaches, a disparity in symptoms on lying and standing, bizarre facial swelling that has baffled every medic I have met and a list of medications that keeps getting longer without treating anything, really is amazing.    Yesterday we left with an answer, proving my mum’s sentiment that ‘giving up is never an option’.   I very much look forward to hearing from you next week about booking in with Professor Sandmann for surgery.   Then, as you said, after that, I will be able to start my life!   I attach the photo of me getting to hit the gong – what a moment! My update for you on … is: She is 6 months post surgery. She has achieved weight gain to pre illness weight and her BMI is in the healthy range. She is back at school and now she is tap dancing, her legs are all restored of feeling.

(Before the operation she required a wheelchair -inserted by Th. Scholbach).

She is very happy. She has mild back ache, abdominal pain and nausea but this is improving every month that passes. She still has some bad headaches but they are much less. We are so grateful to you both and now we are trying to share with doctors in New Zealand and other patients about abdominal compression syndromes. I believe you have had many patients from New Zealand … and I enjoy hearing from them when they visit you both and you help them also.

Dear Thomas,    I hope you are keeping well!   I want to introduce you to my son … born 10/06/23 on his due date. He was born naturally and without too much complication other than being a very fast labour at 3hrs in total which they suspect was because of my hEds. The doctors had taken extra precautions in case of post partem haemorrhage because of my hEds and past vascular problems but overall things went well, although i did have a pph but it was controlled, and Paul is a very healthy baby weighing 7.6lb at birth.    Although it is too soon to properly judge yet, since his birth I have had little to none of my previous nutcracker symptoms that I had before pregnancy…. Pregnancy has had a positive effect on me physically and I feel healthier than I ever have and I’m now a healthy weight an eating a normal diet.   It’s hard to believe that when I first saw you 4 years ago, I was in a dire underweight state being fed through a tube and now I am healthy and have a child after a successful pregnancy, I never believed it would be possible after everything!   It is thanks to you and Professor Sandmann that I have a life now, I will never stop being grateful to you.   Kind regards,

Hallo Herr Prof. Scholbach,

wir hatten Anfrang Februar mit unserer Tochter einen Termin bei Ihnen.

Wir möchten uns ausdrücklich bei Ihnen bedanken. Das Leben unserer Tochter startet gerade neu.

Die Operation ist jetzt 5 Wochen her und langsam pendelt sich alles wieder ein. Sie kann wieder relativ normal essen und blüht langsam und stetig auf.

Endlich plant sie wieder Unternehmungen und trifft sich auch schon kurze Zeit mit Ihren Freunden.

Natürlich hat sie noch Wundschmerzen, sie betont aber immer wieder, dass diese nicht mit den vorigen Schmerzen vergleichbar sind.

Nächste Woche startet sie mit Physiotherapie und danach möchte sie wieder regelmäßig ins Fitnessstudio gehen.

All das wäre nicht möglich gewesen, wenn wir nicht Anfang Februar die 450 km zu Ihnen gefahren werden. Ehrlich gesagt, waren Sie unser letzter Strohhalm. Eine Odyssee an Arztbesuchen, Klinikaufenthalten mit diversen Tests liegt hinter uns. Aber jeder sagte uns, dass alles in Ordnung sei. Dabei hatte leider kein Arzt an Gefäßkompressionen gedacht.

Danke auch, dass Sie uns so zeitnah einen Termin in der Klinik in Düsseldorf verschafft haben. Das Team zusammen Professor Sandmann sind einfach großartig.

Wagen Sie es ja nicht irgendwann einmal in den Ruhestand zu gehen, ohne einen geeigneten Nachfolger für Ihre Arbeit zu finden. Ihre Können müssen sie unbedingt weitergeben, für unsere Tochter waren Sie der Lebensretter. Ich werde Sie uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen.

Yes , no pain medication since July last year 🙂 !  …is gaining weight, eating well, doing a Salsa course, doing yoga course, swimming, walking every day (and she can’t believe that she can walk without feeling any pain in her legs……:).)

I went to see you for the Doppler US examination, due to 14 years of postprandial pain, on the 22 th of sep. You diagnosed me with left venal vein compression and may thurner constellation among other things.

It has only been a month and I have a new life with no or only little postprandial pain. I am gaining weight and I am not afraid of eating before going to work or eating if I am going somewhere special.

I stopped taking duloxetin as a painkiller….

Hello Professor Scholbach!!

I think of you every day and am reminded of the beautiful blessing God has given me, when we were led to Germany! For some reason tonight, I sat down and read your email you sent after my first exam in Germany, and for the first time, really truly took the time to read every word and detail, and I am quite emotional. I cannot begin to tell you how much my life has changed since the surgery. I no longer know what it is like to experience pain from eating. I can sit down with the family and enjoy a full course meal, even though my portion is still quite small compared to many. I have not gained any weight since surgery, but neither have I lost any, and that is very encouraging to me! Seven weeks after surgery, I was able to get rid of my PICC line for good. I’m enjoying food, like I never knew possible. My family will still sit and stare some days, with eyes wide and jaws dropped at the very sight of me attempting to eat food!? My nieces and nephews remark at the oddness of Aunt Susie eating when they eat. It truly is such a blessing!! And one, that I just never knew to be possible!! Thank you so much for your part in all of this!!

I had really hoped to stop in on our way home from Düsseldorf, but I was so weak and exhausted and didn’t know how it would be possible to have an ultrasound performed on a tummy that felt too tender to touch.? We flew back home on May 31st. My recovery was definitely more rough than any of my previous surgeries, but I was back to work a few days after surgery..working from my hospital bed, scheduling surgeries.

One major disappointment that I’m facing is the severe separation of my abdominal muscles and a big hernia in my lower abdomen. I am currently undergoing testing and then another surgery to repair that. This has happened for me after my MALS surgery, but I thought it was something I had done, such as exercise such as planks etc. This time I didn’t do any physical activity of any sort, and didn’t lift more than 10 pounds for almost four months, and still it happened. My surgeons recognize this is probably due to the extensive EDS and so now they are taking extra measures to assure this will not happen again, by placing mesh between every layer of muscle in my abdomen. We hope for the best, as usual!? Surely, surgery number 14 will be my lucky number!!

Just wanted to say thank you again for all your help! You and your team have truly been a life saver in so many ways, and I feel quite blessed to have had the means and support to seek help in your country!! Life has such an interesting twist to it, and I can’t regret anything I went through over the years, and I didn’t know it could be lived with so much less pain, and the joy of eating food. I actually experience now, what I used to ponder about…how can someone actually pretend to enjoy food so much!! It wasn’t pretending!! It was real!!? Food is good, and it is enjoyable!!

…I can’t thank you enough for the work you are doing. I am about 15 weeks post-op and my life has changed so much.

I have gone from daily debilitating headaches to one every two weeks. My Orthostatic tremor is gone and other tremors are rare.

I can stand upright without presyncope.

I remember the first time I stood and hugged my husband after surgery. We cried as I had been unable to hug him or my children for more than a few seconds before needing to sit.

I wonder how many lives you’ve taken part in changing…in saving.

I started an Instagram detailing everything someone needs to know to get to Leipzig and Düsseldorf. I’ve had two women from different countries reach out to me as well as woman I go to church with will be seeing you in October.

I’m trying to take all the worry and stress out of such a stressful time, because I know if they can believe the obstacles can be overcome, their lives can be changed too.

I had a CTA done at one year post up. A radiologist, vascular surgeon, and urologist (who also places PTFE grafts around renal vein) all looked over my imaging to confirm my PTFE grafts and organs still looked great. An additional (and unexpected) benefit from my surgery became evident at a year post op when an ultrasound was performed. It showed my previous severe chronic insufficiency in my legs was completely gone. I have two different doctors who diagnosed this prior to my compression surgery. I even remember a tech asking if I had diabetes because she was shocked at the severity.

Congratulations on your publication connecting EDS & multiple vascular compressions. All the warriors, family, & friends have been celebrating since we heard the news. Thank you for your continued time, energy, and purpose to help all of us.
