I dedicate these lectures to my esteemed teacher in sonography and paediatrics at Leipzig Municipal Hospital, Senior Registrar Dr Rolf Künzel, who introduced me to sonography in 1988 and, despite the difficult conditions regarding the availability of ultrasound equipment in hospitals in the GDR at the time, soon devoted 50 per cent of his consultation time to my training and practical exercises. The constant discussion of unclear findings, the development of new colour-duplex ultrasound methods for localising small-bowel probes, his profound clinical experience, his exceptional clinical judgement and precision, and his generous willingness to share his knowledge are what first paved the way for me into the field of ultrasound diagnostics.
