Venous stents are mainly inserted to treat thrombosis and postthrombotic venous obstructions. Even in this field they carry specific risks.

In venous compression syndromes their application is even more questionable due to the curved course of the afflicted vein. This principal difference to normal veins is the reason for higher failure rates.
